Job Description Summary

AAM is searching for a Senior Product Engineer - Bearings to join our team. This position will be based out of our Advanced Technology Development Center location in Detroit, MI.

As a Senior Product Engineer - Bearings, you will lead the design and development of bearing and bearing-related components from concept through full manufacturing launch.

Working within the Product Engineering Product Development Process (PE-PDP), you will be responsible for ensuring product design meets technical, cost, and timeline expectations across all launch phases. This role requires deep technical expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong focus on design quality, integration, and efficiency.

Job Description

  • Lead the design of bearing and bearing-related components within product systems from concept through launch, in alignment with PE-PDP and program gate deliverables.

  • Use Masta software to analyze, evaluate, and select bearing designs and related components.

  • Create supplier specifications and collaborate with procurement to select, validate, and manage vendors.

  • Collaborate with multi-functional and multi-regional teams to develop and integrate new subsystems or components into the existing product portfolio.

  • Find opportunities to improve efficiency and consistency throughout the development process across various engineering domains.

  • Collaborate with cost engineering to understand the cost impact of design decisions and deliver within the agreed bill of materials (BOM).

  • Coordinate with systems engineering and services to release designs on schedule and support key project milestones.

  • Participate in peer reviews and monthly engineering project status meetings, ensuring compliance with technical requirements and design standards.

  • Contribute to the creation and execution of project plans to meet engineering deliverables.

  • Define and document validation requirements for bearing components within the engineered system.

  • Share lessons learned and support ongoing continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering organization.

  • All other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years experience in bearing design, application, analysis, testing, and failure analysis.  Experience preferably in automotive gearbox applications.
  • 2+ years applied experience in bearing design (Romax & Masta ) and system analysis
